What would i need to be able to work on a fossil excavation?

since i was little my love has been on fossils, outer space, and other stuff that pertains to geology. i figured that i would like to get a degree in geology (eventually i want a phd) and i would love to be able to do some field work in paleontology (not as my job though). What would i need to be able to work on excavations? would i get a degree in geology and specialize in paleontology? also if a get an associates degree in anthropoloy/archaeology could i work on archaeological sites as well?
