Black Ops on Xbox 360, how do you kill the VC on the boat?

It keeps detecting me even though I swim deep and go directly up under the boat...I've done this several times, sometimes going to the edge of the boat and swimming directly up to it. It doesn't give you any hints or clues about how and where your suppose to go to kill him. Please help!
