Why did France conquer Vietnam easily in the 1800s when in 1950s they cannot retake it?

Because in the 1800s the Vietnamese were fighting with sticks and bows and arrows. The French had guns. In 1950, the French were fighting well armed, well trained Viet Minh soldiers supported by the Chinese.
